I ended up creating one of the leading resource sites for RA's in response: Rahelper.com Regardless, thanks for the thoughtful post.Jonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02387917358847285733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31021134.post-4007657906653293642007-11-15T02:34:00.000-05:002007-11-15T02:34:00.000-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Jonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02387917358847285733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31021134.post-67637044010369350162007-04-21T22:51:00.000-04:002007-04-21T22:51:00.000-04:00Very well thought out and well written, Mike. I never thought about some of the things that you've written about here -- at least not in the same way that you describe them -- but what you mention does seem to make a great deal of sense now that I consider it.

I know I took the direction of not policing all residents as an RA while still making sure to follow through on more extreme situations (particularly those that were disruptive to the "community"). The idea of keeping the enforcement internal does seem beneficial to the University as a whole, despite those with the mindset similar to mine. Whether or not this was the intention from the very beginning is questionable, but it seems to have worked out that way regardless.Matt Hugginshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11328504403632216688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31021134.post-69632228473626691702007-04-19T19:43:00.000-04:002007-04-19T19:43:00.000-04:00I think that the diversity we see from ResLife is ...I think that the diversity we see from ResLife is part of the bureaucracy. They need to look like they're doing something. Think of FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security. It isn't bothering me, nor the RA so nothing gets done.

I would like to see us get rid of the diversity junk that they try and shove down our throats now during hall meetings. I've just about had enough of that.Justin Kateshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02233481014663982360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31021134.post-7512370411864721652007-04-19T10:30:00.000-04:002007-04-19T10:30:00.000-04:00I must agree with you on the large majority of wha...I must agree with you on the large majority of what you've written here. I found it particularly accurate when you wrote that RA's are essentially present to prevent residents (and especially freshmen) from killing themselves.

While I think the word "enrich" is too indepth for what the RA/HD does, I would like to think that some of us that took up that post were there to be more than police. I often used the analogy of a cross roads signpost with my staff members - the RA is not often the end-solution for a resident's problem, but more likely, a guide to a more appropriate venue or person for that solution. However, much like the student who subsribes to the mission statement, these staff members tend to be more the minority than the majority.

Either way, well said.Kevin Tresslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16278769906906215526noreply@blogger.com
